Details on Playing in Second Life
Today we get some details from www.dabluezpreacher.com about how he gets gigs in Second Life, how much money he makes, how much time it takes, and more.
I hook my mixer up to my computer via soundcard and make sure my sound is coming through the computer. Then the venue owner gives me access to a stream that she rents from a real life company (shoutcast stream) and I bring up my streaming software (SAM broadcaster ) and enter the URL , password and port. I go to the venue and I get onstage and I start the stream that the venue owner gave me, and I start playing live. Now whenever anyone comes into that specific area (it has limits, like 50 people per parcel) they just hit their streaming music button and whatever comes through my computer comes through their player. They request songs live and I see them in real time and play them, just like a real show, except the avatar is a guy from denmark. after the show the venue owner pays me what was agreed(usually 5000 linden) and I also had my tip jar out for extra money
Rich Palmer from www.richpalmer.com also chimes in on how its not a bad gig. It’s not going to make you a millionaire, but it will give you money for more gear, or to pay for your website.
Rehearsal Space Tales
Simon from www.windisch.co.uk was wondering if anybody had any tips or tales on picking a rehearsal space. Send them on in 888-563-3228
Virtual Business Cards
You can use the http://www.textmarks.com service so that someone can text a keyword (that you select) and you can have it send your information (your website, contact information, etc).
New Home Recording Podcast
Today’s show has a product review of Focusrites Liquid Mix. His podcast can be found at www.rhymeandmelody.com and his band is at www.questpoetics.com (we hear a song from them at the end of the show).

Today we get a great idea about getting the most exposure from free downloads on your site.
Getting the Most Out of Your Band’s Free Downloads
If you’re worried about giving your music fore free, I would agree. Typically most people require a enail address and name (so sign up for the newsletter to get a free song). Some people make free music available to those who purchase their CD (available as “bonus” material). But there are those that want to take the Chic Fil-A at the mall approach and give you a song for free in hopes that you buy the whole CD (where at the Mall the Chic Fil-A restaturant gives you a piece of chicken hoping you will buy a whole sandwich). But if these people take your music and like it, they may not know how to get more.
Well today Dave King from www.davekingmusic.com came up with a great idea. Why not put a “tag” to the end of the song saying “Hi This is (your name) and you just listened to (song name) for more music go to (your website). I LOVE THIS IDEA. But then I thought about it…
On CNN, and some Yahoo sites, when watching a video they make you sit through a SHORT commercial before getting to the “feature presentataion.” So I ask is this is good idea? If so, is it better at the beginning or the end (or both). Click Here to take survey
You could even ste up a “Langing page” like www.mywebsite.com/cd so that you could track the return from giving away singles. You could do this for your songs you upload at the podsafe music network. We’d love your feedback on this idea Click Here to take survey
Making “Gear Money” in Second Life
Raf from www.dabluezpreacer.com has been boosting sales internationally by playing gigs in Second Life (a viritual world with 9 million people from many different countries). We’ve heard of this before, but people were saying “it was better than making no money.” What is your experience? Have you played gigs in second life? Are you making decent money (or at least the same amount as if you played a club? ). Let us know on our comment line 888-563-3228 (or leave a comment on the blog).

Perhaps this could be interesting for the cooler listeners: In a German musicians’ forum I just read about a quite interesting piece of software sold by an Austrian label. It’s called Rebeat Digital and can be found at http://en.rebeat.com/digital.html . The software allows you to distribute your music via a whole lot of internet music stores and platforms worldwide (list of stores: http://en.rebeat.com/digital/portalliste.html). As far as I can tell, it’s only for European residents, since you a valid EU banking account to use the software.
The software itself costs 99 Euros, which is about US$ 150, as a one-time license fee. Then you have to pay 1 Euro (approx. US$ 1,50) storage fee for each song, also as a one-time fee. If you don’t have a barcode for your album and ISRC codes for your songs yet, you can get the barcode (one per album) for 5 Euros (approx. US$ 7.50) and the ISRC codes (one per song) for 1 Euro (approx. US$ 1,50) each. E. g. you would have to pay 29 Euros (approx. US$ 45) as a one-time fee for the digital distribution of one album with 12 songs. In addition Rebeat keeps a 15% margin from the income of sold songs. I don’t know if these are reasonable prices, but since the list of digital stores looks quite huge on a first glance, I thought it could be worth having a look at the software.
Best wishes from Germany to Ohio,
Michael

Is Your Band’s Website Missing Some iTems?
I went to find some music to see this weekend. My girfriend suggested that we see a band called Cosmic Candy. (http://www.cosmiccandy.org/) Well I want to hear them first. Unfortunately there is audio on their website or their “eye blinding myspace” www.myspace.com/thecosmiccandyband Likewise I see where they don’t have an email list to keep their fans updated on their progress.
On their schedule they listed the name and city of the club. Do you realize that you are now forcing your fans to google search? Why not provide the address, the phone number of the club. You can also use yahoo maps (or mapquest etc), and then put a link to the directions on YOUR website.
If you are using MySpace for your MAIN website I have two words. MPE .com (ok is that two words) PEple put all their eggs in the mp3.com basket. The site got sold, and people who were maing 10,000 a month are now making 0.
On your Photo album page make sure there is a picture of a FULL CLUB for potential booekrs to see.
They did a good job of putting where they are (Northern Ohio), but they didn’t put their phone number in that paragraph (again make it easy).
AUDIO ON YOUR WEBSITE
The AUDIO SOLUTION that I just LOVE is Wimpy Player that makes it soooo easy to put audio on your website (that can or can’t be downloaded - you pick). You install the software and upload your mp3s. It’s 30 bucks. Check out the Wimpy Player

THROW A NICKLE SALE
This is an interesting script that works with your paypal account. Every time the product is purchased the price goes up .05 It sends a unique download links and protects the URL. It sends an email to the buyer. It’s pretty cool and its only 16.27 as I write this (as they are using the nickle script to sell it)
The only thing I didn’t like about the script is it uses the IPN feature in paypal, but there is a way to disable this if you dno’t want to use it.
So you could sell your demos for $3. If 20 people buy those the price will go up to $4 and you will have made $60. In the end you might sell more music.

This show originates at http://www.musicianscooler.com
As I play with more and more musicians I’m surprised at how many don’t have ANY knowledge of some of the "Technical" stuff that you can use to marketing your music. Today I talk about making an mp3 from a CD. When you’re music is in MP3 format you can email a song to people. Here is an example:
Typically you would give everyone a CD at practice, and maybe spend some time listening to the CD. Why not turn the CD into MP3’s and email the songs ahead of time to the band members. Then people can decide if they like the song or not. This means instead of making practice a "listening party" it now turns into a productive time or put the songs together that you learned at home.
However to do this you need to know how to take a CD and "turn" it into an mp3. To do this we will use iTunes. Why iTunes? This program is free and it works on both a Mac and a PC. Here are some steps:
CREATING AN MP3 IN iTUNES
Click on the Edit menu and choose Preferences
Click on the Advanced tab.
Click on the General tab and you will see where this file will be saved. This is important if you are going to email it to someone. You need to know where to find it on your computer (so take note).
Click on the Importing tab
Choose the option for MP3 encoding at 128 Kbps.
Click on OK.
When you put in your CD, it won’t recognize your music (but it would recognize someone on a major label). When it appears it will show as "Audio CD." RIGHT CLICK on the Audio CD and choose Get Info.
Enter your name, the title of the CD, the genre and year. Now iTunes has information about the CD but not the tracks.
Click on your first track, and then RIGHT CLICK and choose Get Info. Here you can enter the name of track 1. Click the NEXT button to move to the next song (where you would enter the name of the song). Repeat until you’re done with all the tracks. That’s it. Now your music is in a digital format. You can email to people, or you can burn just certain tracks to a CD.

MAKING MONEY WITH YOUR MUSIC BY SELLING SHEET MUSIC
Pete Huttlinger is selling tabs of his music on his site. This makes sense as guitar players want to know how Pete is pulling of his phenomenal playing. I looked into this and there are a few programs that make it easy to convert your music to "tab" or sheet music. This was inspired by www.petehutlinger.com who is a mind boggling musician
Guitar Pro 5 $49 Geared towards a guitarist, but also prints out a "Standard" staff.
Finale PrintMusic 2007 ($69)
MakeMusic! Finale PrintMusic 2008 Music Notation Software ($79)
Then you could use a free program at www.primopdf.com that allows you to make anything into a pdf and sell it to your musician fans.
This would work for Christian artist (so an artist might cover your song in church), if you have songs for children a school or day care may buy it so the children can sign it</itunes:summary>

This week we interview Shannon Curfman
SHANNON CURFMAN
She had a major label deal by the age of 14. The label try to take this bluesy, soulful rocker and turn her into Britney Spears. Well Shannon would have none of that.
The experience left her leaving the music business for a short period, but now she’s back and better than ever and on her own label (and loving it).
I found Shannon’s new album at emusic.com where you can get 35 free songs for signing up for a free trial. If you don’t like it, you can cancel and keep the songs. Best of all, the songs are DRM free so you can burn them to a CD or throw them on an ipod (or other mp3 player) with NO RESTRICTIONS. Go to

EASY WAYS TO DRIVE TRAFFIC TO YOUR BAND’S WEBSITE
In my book Get Your Band Out of the Basement (and keep them out of the asylum) I mention how putting pictures of our fans on our website (RELIGIOUSLY) TRIPPLED our website traffic. People knew that if I took their picture it would appear on our website the next day.
Be sure to have your website address in your signature. As this is the last thing in your email, it gets more clicks than many of the items in the middle of your email.
Also why not use your expertise of (insert your instrument) at answers.yahoo.com (and be sure to have your website address in your signature).
Another "answer" based website is www.fluther.com Why not go answer some questions about your instrument (for example guitar).
If you are looking for message boards where you can find your target listeners check out http://www.boardtracker.com/
FROM THE GROUP

Dave King gives us a review of the Mio C230, and says he’s used a Garmin, and except for the voice being more like a computer, he really liked it and it’s only $126!

TALES FROM THE ROAD
Marc Gunn of www.marcgunn.com and www.bardscrier.com tells us a story of bloody noses, (not once but TWICE).
