“Can I manage my band’s website with just a blog?”
Quick Answer: Yes as it will allow you to set up pages for “About, Schedule, Sound, Merchandise, Bio, etc”
Why would I want to do this?
Search engines love relevant news. This is typically the latest news. Blogs are easy to update, and most of the time have the most up to date news. Hence, search engines love blogs. You could easily have a “news” section where all the band members contribute to keep the updates coming. These don’t have to be “War and Peace” it could be a simple 3 sentence review of your last show.
Blogs Can Be Free
Wordpress (www.wordpress.org) and Joomla (www.joomla.org) are “Blogging Software” that are free. You only need to find a host for your files (such as www.coolerwebsites.com starting at $2 a month or use Godaddy’s “Quick blog” )
Blogs Are Easy to Use
If you can use a word processor, you can use a blog. You can upload “themes” (think clothes for your blog) to dress it up. There are also “plug ins” for your blogs to boost their features (again, most of these are free).
Why would I not want to do this then?
When you design in html, you have total control of where everything is. With a blog, you have a template and the site follows the similar look. If you love that look, great. You can change the look of each page, but it will still reflect the overall look of the site. You CAN move things where you want; it’s just not always as easy as using good old fashioned html. None the less, it’s still pretty easy. If you are on a budget, you could use a blog to manage your band’s website for pennies a day. While these may not be as “Fancy shamncy” as some sites, you can still spice it up like Nick from www.nicksjourney.com
