FCC May Force Radio to Play Indie Bands

The Federal Communications Commission might force broadcast radio to play indie bands

The FCC’s weighing an internal proposal to require all stations to include slots on their play lists for independently produced tracks, according to the Hollywood Reporter. While no details  where to draw the line between indie and major (that should be fun to figure out)  were revealed, the move’s seen as an option to help level the broadcast playing field after yet another round of payola scandals.

Maybe they’ve finally figured out that they need something besides Pink Floyd, Eddie Money, and AC/DC on the radio to fill up the dial. I also wonder if this is for those wonderful “High Definition Radio” stations that they are talking about (and is anyone listening to that?)

I never listen to radio (except if I’m in my girlfriends car, and then its scan, scan, scan, scan, scan, scan, scan -oh wait here is a song, oh darn We’re here!).

I think clear channel and others have ruined radio, and not just music. In Cleveland there is a popular sports guy. He has #1 in drive time in the afternoons. They ruined his show. They make him do traffic every 10 minutes, and have enough commercials to choke on. So if this is the FCC and Radio’s attempt to say “We know you want choices” then its too little, too late. If I’m not listening to a Podcast, I’m listening to my commercial free, super niche Siruis Satelit Radio that I can pause and rewind (but sadly has no indie - as in unsigned - bands).
