Tales From the Road with George Hrab (repost)

by Dave on August 5, 2009

Today we learn great lessons about gigging from George Hrab (this is actually taken from his “Geologic Podcast from July 23rd).

This show originates from www.musicianscooler.com

George (www.georgehrab.com) talks about a gig he did (as a drummer/percussionist) with a harpist doing jazz. In this hilarious tale we learn:

Always get directions to the gig, and verify them before the gig.
If you’re sitting in with people for the first time, a rehearsal may be in order.
You want to specify your duties up front.
You want to specify payment (how much, and in what format you will receive it).
Show up on time to be prepared for the gig (not 5 minutes to show time).
Giving away free t-shirts to the band does not count as payment.
If you can’t carry your instrument, bring someone with you who can.

Music

“Barney’s in the Vent” from Interrobang (if you are a Frank Zappa fan, I HIGHLY recommend it). For all things George check out www.georgehrab.com for more information about George’s music check out http://geologicrecords.net/

As a Celtic harpist, I laughed my head off listening to George Hrab’s worst gig story. What an idiot harpist. Hasn’t she ever heard of hiring roadies, running a rehearsal, checking in with her group beforehand, having envelopes to pay people out at gigs, etc.? Anyway, thank you again for sharing.

Cheers,
Anne :-)
