Download Cards Deliver Serious Profits to Musicians
Download Cards - Another Tool For the Music Marketing Mind
Today I have a discussion with Matthew James of Music Manufacturing Services at www.mmsdirect.com where in addition to offering to manufacturer your music on CDs, and Vinyl they now offer Music Download Cards. You can have 500 cards created for around .64 each. You decide how many songs a person can download (up to 25) if/wehn it will expire, and how much the cards costs. As people are use to spending .99 on a song, if you sell a card that enables them to download 12 songs for $6.00 you would be making some serious profit. This is a great tool to add to your music marketing arsenal.
Another benefit of Music Download Cards is that it enables you to sell downloads without a credit card. A person could either pay in cash at a gig, or mail you a check via snail mail, and you can give them a card, or mail them a card (a lot cheaper than mailing a CD) and they could buy your music without a credit card.
Another great feature is you can check on a card you have passed out to see if the music has been downloaded. So now you could hand a card to a club owner and later check to see if they've downloaded the music. (You might check to see if they would prefer a CD as well).
Last but not least, every time I order a CD when it arrives through the mail the front plastic is usually cracked from shipping. Now you can drop a card in an envelope with no worries (and no special trip to the post office).
Membership Has It's Preveledges.
I've spoken before about one way to make more money as a musician is to have a membership site using software like Easy Member Pro or Amember. Now you could put up demos, interviews, etc, and only your exclusive members (who have purchased cards) get access to your contnent. Here in Ohio we have a card called the "Golden Buckey" card for senior citizens. It entitles them to discounts at certain places. Why not add more value to the card by working with club owners and say "Can my fans who show this card get $1 off the door charge? their first drink? get their friend in free?" Now the card does more than give you great music, it's worth even more. You can have the cards last forever, or you can put an expiration date on them. YOU deicde (you might want a card to expire so that you can load the latest CD).
If you order soon, they will wave the $99 yearly account fee (for ths first year).

Go Where Your Fans Are
My niece went to the Vans Warped Tour. She bought CDs from the "healdiners," and also bough some CDs of local indie bands that were there with ipods or CD players of their music (to sample) and CDs to purchase. They bought 5 CDs by the end of the day.
I've said it before, it's hard to listen to someone's music and then reject them to their face. It does take some effort as my niece said many people were ignoring these bands as they were pimping their music, but they did sell some CDs.

Hi All.. Fizzkicks.com is another site that offers bands the ability to custom design their own music download cards to sell or distribute. Bands can use their own music cards to distribute music, full albums, and videos. FizzKicks also provides a media player widget that allows allows fans redeem their music card directly from the band's site. For anyone interested in music cards for their band it is worth a look.
